New York Fashion Week: From Logo Mania to Insanity

One of the biggest stars of New York Fashion Week was definitely Alexander Wang who is often said to be the new Marc Jacobs. Proving that he is much loved by Manhattan fashion crowd, Kanye West, Courtney Love, Kerry Washington and Solange Knowles all rocked up to his show which was scheduled for the weekend, while Marc Jacobs’s was moved to the last day. His name was laser-cut and printed on dresses and gloves announcing the logo mania trend for Spring/Summer 2014 which was also seen at DKNY.

Victoria Beckham showed up in huge grey “cake” dress from her Victoria collection featuring some amazing knitwear, A-line skirts and loose-fitting dresses which are going to be trendy next summer. Her success in New York is closely watched by British press and fans of David Beckham who was sitting right next to Anna Wintour and taking care of their daughter Harper.

As for the color palette, many designers were opting for whites, pastels and black and white combinations. One of the most exciting monochromatic collections was the one by Derek Lam who showed some wonderful minimalistic pieces with details like fringe and black and white gingham print. On the other hand, Tommy Hilfiger, Jenny Packham and Kate Spade collections were extremely colorful, while Oscar de la Renta dresses were rich with flower patterns.

Inspired by Paris, Capri and Morocco Deborah Lloyd from Kate Spade played with bold colors, quirky prints and slogans. Standing against green garden hedge models looked gorgeous in her vintage-like dresses in blue, red, fuchsia, yellow and silver. She also designed lovely tennis style dresses which are going to be popular next summer and paired them with casual trainers. The collection is spiced up with  a collection of cute clutches resembling old book covers with writings like: “Paris and the Single Girl by Vivian Worth” and a beach bag with a slogan “When Life Hands you Lemons” – just to add a bit more of that European chic.

There were allot of sequins and shimmery fabrics on catwalks, especially at Jenny Packham, Anna Sui, Jason Wu, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors, but they were carefully scattered and rather elusive, absolutely avoiding excessiveness.

Phillip Lim introduced some curvy cuts and wavy shapes in his ever so avant-garde collection, but also promoted his collection for Target featuring pop art “Boom” jumper worn by Jessica Alba at his show.

Allot of dreamy dresses made out of soft see-through fabrics and layers of lace were seen at Badgley Mischka, Caroline Herrera, Helmut Lang, Honor, Philosophy and Theyskens Theory in contrast to sexy safari theme seen at Diane Von Furstenberg and Donna Karan.

However, out of all the shows at New York Fashion Week perhaps the most striking ones were Calvin Klein for fringed jackets, modernity and mixing of tribe look with ‘80s art and ‘20s style, Thom Browne for daring shapes, steam punk touch and insanity, Narcisco Rodriguez for innovative minimalism and impeccable layering and Proenza Schouler for architecture and interior design inspiration, fiber prints, geometrical shapes and hand painted lines.
